Scrubbing out Word codes
When Word documents don't convert well, you can spend hours trying to clean up the mess. In some cases, it's quicker to just strip out the formatting and start over. In WordPerfect, save the Word file to Windows Write format, then retrieve the file back into WordPerfect. You'll get Courier and bold/italics/underline, but that's about it. This tip was posted by Denis Corr on the WPWin Listserv. Note: You must have the optional conversion filters installed.

Converting Word 97/2000 Documents to WordPerfect 8 Format
There are three ways to go, and you can use any or all of them:
- Apply the latest service pack for WP 8, which includes conversion filters for Word 97/2000. The filters were added in Service Pack 4 and are included in all later service packs. Going this route, just open the documents in WP 8 and they will automatically convert on opening. When saved, WP 8 operators get a dialog asking whether they wish to save to the original file format or save to WP format. For download links, go to the WP 8 sections on the Patches and Updates page or on Corel's site . Note: you must have build 8.0.0.225 or higher in order to apply SP-7. If you don't have a build number that high (Check WP > Help > About), Corel will provide a replacement for the cost of shipping and handling, $10-15 U.S.. If you need to order a replacement CD for WP 8 or any other Corel product, the contact information and procedures are here.
- Download Corel's free stand-alone program to convert Word 97 files. WordPerfect users have reported good results using it to convert Word 2000 files as well. Download WP8CNV97.EXE from Corel's site. or via FTP from ftp.corel.com , ftp1.corel.com or ftp2.corel.com. In Europe, download from Corel's server in Ireland.
The stand-alone converter can be used to compliment any WordPerfect version using the WP 6/7/8/9 file format.
- Upgrade to WordPerfect Office 2000. The Word conversion filters for WP 8 are adequate for many documents. However, those filters were completely rewritten from scratch and were a high priority feature for WordPerfect Office 2000, which now sets the standard for WP-Word conversions. If the WP 8 regime is troublesome and many Word documents require conversion, you might consider upgrading to WordPerfect Office 2000.
